cash advice

Hi guys, I have a wee question that I would be grateful for a bit of advice about. I have finally lifted my head out of the sand re my debts and I have worked out that I can only really afford £10 a week on sundries - and I really should try and not spend all of that £tenner, so for the last week Ive been using my debit card to pay for things like car park £2.40 and most of the time I can go the whole week without any cash, I dont really want to withdraw the £10 as its bound to get spent and I need as much money as possible to stay in the account - so my question is how do you guys manage your 'pocket money' do you withdraw the allowable amount or do you use a debit card in the hope you dont spend the whole allowable amount? What happens when you need hard cash? next sunday Ive agreed to pay a friend £2 towards petrol as she is driving us somewhere....sadly friends dont take cards!! and ive put all my loose change into the bank to try and reduce the overdraft...any helpful advice on how to manage pocket money would be great...thanks

  • I find it easier to keep track of money that I spend in cash. All essential bills and other expenses are paid by DD or SO.

For "sundries" (non-essentials) I have a small amount of cash in my purse - and when it's gone it's gone. It makes me think whether or not I really need whatever it is I think I want to buy.

If I put all these little things on card then I'd loose track of how much I had spent and on what.

I use cash as I find i'm more careful about how I spend it.

Im just worried that if I took the £10 out I would spend it all - so far this week Ive only spent £2.40 at the car park, and my daughter wanted something from Boots for £4.60 so at the moment I have an underspend of £3 which can be left safely in the bank.

Try 2 weeks of debit card then 2 weeks of cash & then decide.

  • I try and manage sundry spends by using cash. Went to the cashpoint this morning though before work to withdraw £10 and the machine could only dispense £20 notes!!! Grrrr! Got myself in a right tizzy 'cos I needed cash so withdrew £20 whilst chastising the machine aloud. Glad no one was about! I just know for a fact though it's more difficult to manage £20 than £10 if you know what I mean. Mind you, before my LBM I wouldn't have thought twice about withdrawing £50+ for sundry spends and believe me it was spent without seeing anything for it. Anyway I ramble but good, hard cash is the way I do it. Best of luck with whichever way you go x

sounds like hard cash is the way to go, and then try really really hard not to spend all of it and see if theres a challenge I can join for the leftover money, thanks
