Help with taking someone to small claims

Hi i'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it looked the most likely and friendly:)

Last year my DH lent some money on his credit card to a friend to start a business, the business closed a month later ( a short let barrow in a shopping centre that wasn't making enough money). The friend made several payments to the card, but due to money problems hasn't paid anything since last april. My DH helped him out with a separate business in June last year in the hope of the friend making enough money to pay back the original loan (Dh is way too trusting :( ) and basically in august the whole thing ended in huge arguments between the friend and the owner of the new premises (not paying rent ). My dh and this friend owned several vehicles together and the friend very kindly smashed up the ones on our property (they had been moved there from the business premises in a hurry), and later stole another vehicle from the mot garage. The police became involved over the vehicles, and he admitted to them owing us money, but not that we part owned the cars :(
Basically we have been waiting for the police to sort out the cars (they still haven't  ) before claiming through small claims for the money, until someone pointed out we could claim for the money on the credit card first, while waiting to see what the police are doing about the cars.
So I'm hoping for some advice on sending a letter before proceedings, and whether we would be better sending one ourselves or paying a solicitor.
Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post.
