Making a houmous type thing without tahini paste?

I dont have any tahini paste and really want to limit the amount of oil in the receipe as am on a diet. Can I make a houmous without it, just using chickpeas, oil, lemon and garlic? I do have some sesame seeds though?

Are there any other dip type things I could make say out of beans, kidney beans?

    You can :)

And yes, you can experiment using other beans or pulses to make dips :T

Broad beans make a really nice dip-type thing and perhaps you could make one with butter-beans as well Houmous without the tahini is OK but can be rather bland: I'd double or treble the garlic and lemon-juice or chuck some fresh parsley or coriander in there if available. Some harissa would make it really stand up and take notice

It's easy to make a lowfat humus type dip. Wizz a small tin of chickpeas in a food processor with a clove of garlic and a large pinch of chilli powder, some salt and pepper. Add the juice of a lemon and about 1 to 2 tablespoons of low fat natural yougurt. Wizz again and adjust the consistency with more yougurt if needed. Check the seasoning. This will keep in the fridge for a couple of days and tastes better after a few hours in the fridge to let the flavours mingle

Blending onions, peppers or tomatoes into the paste is really nice, too! It would be diet-friendly if you did them raw but I prefer to roast them in lots of oil ;)

i did wonder about onions and things as to whether to put them in raw or cook them first.

i dont mind using oil in a dip, but want to minimise it to some extent so didnt want to use tahini as this is more oil based input, however have stuck it on the asda order for tomorrow anyway

i often put a tablespoon of oil in a mixture (have cooked up a big ratatouille with 2 spoons in), this is only 124 cals for one and if something does about 2 or 3 servings i think that is good value, but i envisage using about a tablespoon of oil per serving of this dip so didnt want to add more

    Hi,

I was just looking for lunch ideas and stumbled into this thread. Strangely, the place I was before this had a hummous recipe without tahini which I popped in my favourites:

    "1 small can chickpeas, drained
    1 clove garlic
    salt & pepper to taste
    lemon juice, about 1 teaspoon
    1 tablespoon plain yoghurt
    flesh of one ripe avocado

Put it all in a blender and whizz until smooth. Serve on pitta bread, or as a dip with veg sticks."

http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk/ There's lemon and black pepper, tomato, red pepper and also a spicy bean pate. All really delicious too :)
