[FONT="]It will take 3 to 6 months to get the content ready so should I purchase a domain name now and stick a page up just to get it indexed or should I wait and launch the whole site when it's finished?

Register the domain name now so you don't lose it (if you have a specific one in mind, that is available)
I woudn't bother it submitting it for indexing until you have osme content- what are they going to index???
Submit to Google, once you have a handful of pages of useful, original content
NEVER take up any offers from "SEO companies" who say they'll get you the top of Google if you pay. You can get there yourself just with good contect- depending on the niche area you've chosen.
