For my dads 60th we had a part at home. He has had a tough couple of years. We got all old picture of him out of the loft and made a big 6 0 on the wall with them. The cake was a whiskey bottle, his favourite. We got indoor fireworks for the cake. Got balloons from a local shop (a big 6 0 and some clusters). But most importantly his family and friends were there. Its the little things that make a party amazing and special.

How about a photobook to give him as a present?
Invite some old friends/family that he hasnt seen in a long time or live far away as a surprise.
Have a music selections from his era of growing up, maybe include what was no.1 the day he was born? and play them at the party.

    Some great ideas from Giggles.

How about setting a theme based on the decade your dad grew up? This could fit in with decorations, food and cake etc?

If possible, you could put together a scrap book of his life and have people featured in the photos write personal messages/comments (you could have these emailed or snail mailed to you in advance and you could print them out and stick them in)?

You could decorate white table cloths on the tables with dates or photographs of milestones in your dad's life.

You could also get a friend/family member with a decent camera take a group shot on the night and have this blown up on a photo canvas for your dad to put up at home?

You could also organise trivia quizzes based on 50's - e.g. show clips of famous tv shows/films and/or play 50s tracks and challenge teams to identify songs/artists. You could also have a 50s themed karaoke.

  • Thanks guys great ideas from you both. I love something as simple as putting up the photos but in the shape of 60, i would never have thought of that. We have asked people to email us pics, we've only had 1 response so far but i like the idea that they put the note to go with the pic rather than us. I have looked up what went on in 1951 and omg what a boring year!!! We would love to do a pic book but most of the pics of him went up in smoke last christmas due to fire so we only have recent ones and hardly any child/teen ones etc. I priced a whisky bottle cake as his fave drink too and decided if he was going to have one Id have to join the cake making thread and get practising lol

Love having the theme of the decade.

I have found if you want people to give you pictures you literally need to go round and get them otherwise its the bottom of peoples to do list.

A friend did a photobook for her OHs 30th where she had people in his life take a picture of themselves holding a happy birthday sign (one very creative friend wrote happy birthday on an apple and held that up!) and then wrote a message and my friend arranged them all in a book for him. We all knew we had a page or half a page depending on how many people responded and the messages were full of well wishes, memorials and funny stories and I thought this was a lovely idea. As your Dad has lost alot of his pictures in a fire maybe something like this could be lovely for him to look back on in years to come? Make sure you set a deadline for people a few days before you actually really need them though as people always do things last minute!

Also how about cupcake toppers with a picture of him on? You can get them off ebay for reasonable prices then you can just make the cupcakes yourself :D.

Oh for my Grandads 80th birthday I did a photobook for him that was like a This Is Your Life book and included a biography at the front then various pictures of his 5 children and 10 grandchildren in birth date order (we all had 2 pages each). He absolutely loved it and was amazed at the detail in the biography, even though it is all stories he has told me pretty much. I just started jotting things down over the months before his birthday and also lead some conversations to find out things I wanted to know (like why they had 5 children which was unusual for a family with such a little income - results was I found out my nanna wanted a boy and my auntie was an accident, something she never knew haha). We also had a meal with 40 members of family and his friends and we did a quiz and all the questions were related to my Grandad. A 'How Well Do You really Know (Name)' kind of thing. They ranged from really easy (how many children does he have) for the first question and extremely hard for the fifth one. Then we had a tie breaker question too. Everyone seemed to love this and gave everyone lots of giggles!

We're having a party for my fathers 80th this year and some the ideas are great.....thank you.

If you dont have enough time or enough people respond with photos how about having a book to sign on the night? and take a photo on the night? and give as a gift afterwards.

I love the idea of people taking a photo of themselves wishing your dad happy birthday.

    have a great time :)

My dad loves country and western music, so we threw him a surprise a kinda country themed party.
We had a DJ with country music and made it kinda fancy dress, so cowboy hats and guns.
We put packs of cards and things on the tables as cheap decorations.
And we managed to get these like barrel shapped plant pots, that we lined with tin foil and filled with nachos on the tables.
Then for a buffet, we unusal things like sausage and bean in baked potatoes. (kept the beans and that warm using slow cookers)
And things like cookies and brownies as sweets.
Everyone commented on how great a night it was and the photos were wonderful as so many people were dressed with checked shirts and hats.

Perhaps, you could think along the lines of the type of stuff your dad is in to?
