Why make curries etc out of precooked chicken?

Ok well my maths says
1.5kg chicken at 21g protein per 100g = 330g of protein or enough protein for 412kg of people - at an average weight of 80g is 5 days requirements of protein assuming you aren't getting any other source of protein in your diet. But lets assume for arguments sake they are getting half their protein elsewhere I wouldn't say you are risking your health to get 10 meals out of a chicken...2 main meals for 4, plus a coupla of sarnies...People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

However a 1.5 kg chicken is not 1.5 kg of meat.
Although I do agree about the 2 main meals for 4 out of a chicken, but I would struggle with the sandwiches, too.
My concerns with rubber chicken are not for those that make 2 evening meals for 4 out of a chicken, but I have seen some seriously rubber chicken in my years on here!!!
For example it is not usual to see a chicken drumstick being used as the protein component of a meal for 2 adults. Fine if there is additional pulses and grains, but not on it's own.0 -
no i realise that but the protein content of a whole chicken is 21g per 100g, as oppossed to breasts which are 30g per 100g...o the allowance for skin and bone is already there!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

No they don't. I don't know what your chicken is made of, but standard raw chicken breast fillet is about 20- 21 g of protein per 100g!0 -
That was cooked weight from the info I have.
I'm not claiming to be a nutritional expert just pointing out that rubberised chicken a part of a balanced diet is not a bad thing! For my own weight I'd get at least 7 days worth of protein from chicken - or 14 or more meals. I'm not having a go I'm just not sure your worries about protein level are justified with what most people are doing!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

It's not impossible at all to be protein deficient in this country. There are some seriously faddy diets about, or people suffering from anorexia, people who eat unbalanced vegetarian and vegan diets (I'm not slagging off vegans or vegetatians here but it's amazing how many think vegetarians only eat vegetables!) and in some sad cases, people who are so strongly influenced by health scares about all sorts of things that they barely dare eat anything. Also more commonly, people on very low incomes including elderly people can have very restricted diets. Of course chicken is hardly an essential food but you've either got to be getting a minimal amount of protein from meat or dairy or eggs or from an appropriate combination of plant foods to be healthy. And in sufficient quantities for good health, which vary considerably over the course of one's life.
As to just eating "enough food", there was someone on here a few weeks back trying to work out the cheapest way to consume 1500 calories per day, with no thought to the actual nutritional content. It's got to be enough of the right kind of foods, wouldn't you say?
Got no problem with rubber chicken used sensibly though. A pot of soup made from chicken stock and containing vegetables, lentils and a few scraps of chicken plus a hunk of seedy wholemeal bread ticks most of the boxes for nutritional content. Have a yoghurt for pudding and that's a very good meal.Val.0 -

I do however think that with a medium sized chicken, which we buy, you can get 8 adult meals - however I will add something extra to the second meal like eg bacon (although not in a curry!!) I hate slow cooked whole chicken, though!
I have read all the rubber chicken threads and I would be starving if I had to make a medium chicken make 8 meals:o:rotfl:
When there were the 4 of us, it went like this- each adult had the breast for dinner
- each child had the drummer
- what was left over went in a dish of some sort
- soup

It seems to me that you are making more than 2 evening meals for a family. We carve the breast for roast for everyone and the meat from drumsticks, thighs and the remains go into a second dish. How is that different to what you do?
8 portions out of a chicken is fine. Did you misunderstand my 8 meals as 8 x 4?0 -

8 portions out of a chicken is fine. I really can't see what your problem with that is!
I dont think its a problem, I would just love to be able to do it:o:heartpulsOnce a Flylady, always a Flylady:heartpuls0 -
Join the club jinky, I can never stretch a chicken that far either
On a serious note I do sometimes wonder when someone posts they get 16 meals out of 500 grams of mince about protein levels. At those levels I think I'd rather do a completely veggie meal where the protein element will have been given plenty of thought. If I'm eating meat I like to actually eat meatYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0
