Funny looking supermarket chilled chicken. Help please.

Hi I have just popped a chilled supermarket chicken in the oven, but wasn't sure if it's Ok to eat. When I took it out of the plastic it smelt fine but hadn't been cleaned properly. In side there was quite a bit of 'matter' that looked like weetabix. I'm not sure what it was so I gave the chicken a really good wash in cold water and trimmed back the skin, as usual, and popped it in the oven.

Will it be ok to eat?

TIA

Dx

Is this a raw or precooked bird?

What's the use by date on it?

I would think it will be ok. If it was "off " i am sure you would have smelt it straight away!. I would see what it is like when it is cooked.

If it smells fine, it'll probably be fine :)

I cooked the chicken until it fell apart and gave the 'funny' end to DH :rotfl:. He seems fine. It tasted perfectly ok, in fact, quite delicious. I expect that it simply hadn't been gutted properly and bits, that we don't normally see, had been left behind.

Thanks for the advice... I will let you know if there are any 'developments' :D

The most likely cause of the Weetbix looking stuff is as you said that the chicken innards burst when it was being gutted, it won't do you any harm and is nothing to be squeamish about. You did right by giving it a wash and cooking thoroughly. Pelleted animal feed tends to look like that, even if you stick it in water for a while

like wet wood cat litter! lol

If t was 'off' you'd know.. my OH had to leave his breakfast in the kitchen sink last week after I asked him to double check a smelly bird for me... I was feeling a bit wobbly anyway and my sense of smell isn't too good.. the fact said bird was shiny with geenish tinges meant the foxy loxies had a good dinner! And I got a refund from mr T.. and the bird was 2 days within it's 'display until' date so well in eat by date!.. and to add insult... there were 2 of them.. twin mouldy birds.. BUT.. on closer inspection a fair bit of my frozen stuff looked like it had been warmed and slightly defrosted before delivery.. so the chilled stuff wasn't happy!
