  • On a side note i read in the News of the World on Sunday that if you paint your number plate with Clear Nail Polish it can't be picked up by a Gatso speed camera. They tried it with a standard flash camera and showed a photo with the number plate as a white blob. :)
  • There are three possible basic functions on the best of these devices.

RADAR detection - device makes noises or flashes when it receives a radar beam. Intended to give you warning of mobile speedguns but pretty pointless as most plod use laser based or speed over distance devices now, not radar.

LASER detection - devices makes noises or flashes when it receives laser beam. In theory, more useful than above, but I understood that by the time it has received the signal and you have responded it is too late anyway, and you've been nicked.

ISTR that laser and radar detectors are soon to be outlawed.

The third function is GPS camera location. This is not detecting anything. The device holds the locations of all static cameras in memory and, using GPS, plots your position relative to the camera locations. When you are within range of a camera you get a warning, which may go persistent if you are over the limit for that camera. It will not locate temporary speed cameras, talivans on motorway bridges or a Battenburg following you. I would say that these are useful devices, and I have one built into my satnav system (SmartNav).

But then there are those that say you can save money just by sticking within the speed limit...

If you are caught using these devices you may well get prosecuted for perverting the course of justice - a very serious offence for which you would almost certainly be sent to prison (a minimum of 9 months I would think).

If cautioned by a traffic officer when using a radar detector (I have Snooper - absolutly great) state that they are completely legal according to Snooper and that they are in fact a 'driving aid' 70% less accidents if using a radar detector. Remember that when using one you must never completely trust it, so overall with the camera positions you know and the ones you dont, you drive more carefully. They are not designed for idiots who want to drive like maniacs (be sure, if they put their trust 100% in the device, they will get cought out bigtime) but for carefull drivers to adjust their speed and not become another statistic in the biggest 'legal' money earner in history.
The opionions above are true to the best of my reseach so far on the legallity of the devices.
