Could be another handle on the back too so you carry it with both handles at the same time? And the strap looks adjustable. Would be good if someone has seen/bought any and could let us know. I've been wanting a picnic basket for ages too, but lost my job recently so £35 is still a no no for me :( Ah well, I prefer the basket style ones better than the hampers anyway!

    Liz,
I'll have another look but can't see another handle and the strap doesn't seem to be adjustable. Anyone out there with any suggestions?

Traditional style hampers usually have a carrying handle on the side (like a suitcase) If you use tupperware boxes inside and fill out the space with a teatowel and teacloth it should be fine.

TBH I don't think it is mere coincidence that hampers evolved into modern rucksack styles with adjustable handles - the OS ones are much less convenient, but the recent trend for vintage stuff has brought back the original style over the last couple of years.

You might be right there might not be another handle, but you can't see the back of the basket in the pics so just thought there might be. Looks like from Annie's post there probably isn't though (or if you've seen one in person and I'm just being stupid lol). Also just realised they don't all look like they've got an adjustable strap, but the first pic of one with a pink strap defo has an adjustable looking bit to me - it's almost hidden by a little plate with an apple on it though lol.

The pink strap looks adjustable to me, but the way it is fixed on, you would still end up with the basket on its side like a suitcase.

I don't think it is a design fault though. The reason that the plates and cutlery are fastened to the lid is that they would otherwise be thrown about.....

I think the sale prices are just because BHS always price the RRP high and then have a DFS-like sale for most of the year.... :D

I'm with annie-c. However you adjust the strap it will go on its side. I'll go with tupperware boxes and get on with it. The kids love it and have already had a picnic in the garden so we'll get use out of it.

I'm not sure if I'm being Captain Thicko, but the halfprice Fairtrade one appears to have a use by date of 31/01/2011.

So they might be getting rid of out of date products there.

Most of the products would, i suppose be still OK to use, but I'd be slightly wary of buying things which are already a month past sell by date, and i guess it's reaslisticly going to be another couple of months before you used it, unless you like soggy sandwiches.

I can't post linkys, but can someone else verify? Search for hampers and check the Fairtrade bit - just above the product list, it says "Use by date: 31/01/2011".

Re-reading and the text seems so suggest to give this as a Christmas present, so it does look out of date!

Think you're looking at something different to the thread. This is about picnic hampers, no food included, just pretty baskets with plates, glasses etc. They're beautiful, if not functional!!

I bought one of these last summer when they were half price (the strawberry one).

We take it to classic car shows and have had loads of compliments on how lovely it is.

There is just the one handle but I put food in tupperware boxes inside and there's no problem with food squashing.

Yeah, i guess so. It was referenced on their hampers page, and is certaintly still findable via a search (third option if you search for "Hampers"), but i think they've removed it from their actual picnic hampers page. Although that is how i saw it originally!

They've 'hampered' my point by moving it, and made me seem like i've just been 'pic-nicky'.
