Got one of these kits free from my local police force & neighbourhood watch scheme a couple of years ago. I know lots of police forces do free offers of this kit at various times.

SmartWater has been used by police forces and industry through the UK since it was first invented in the 1990s. The liquid contains a code that can be read under a ultra-violet light and is intended to be applied to valuable items so that if stolen and later seized by police, their original owner can be identified.

Suggest you check with your police force or n/hood watch scheme to see if they have a free offer now.

We just had our PCSO round the other day and if we want SmartWater things we have to pay for them.

He also says although it's a good idea for some items, make sure don't put it on things you may not want in the future. For instance, if you put it on a laptop and later on you sell that laptop via Ebay, you could cause a whole lot of trouble. Or if you put it on something and donate it to charity, that could cause trouble. Once you put the smartwater on something, it'll always be traceable back to you. So be careful what you use it on. :)

    Fair and vaild point.

However, I would hope that common sense and honesty prevails. If the police contact you with regards an item, which you have either sold or given away, I'm sure most people would remember that item and so there wouldn't be any probs.

It is the discretion of the individual what items the smartwater is used for.

we had this done. a local police officer came around the street and did a safety check of the house and left us the smart water and then a few weeks later a man from the council came and fitted us with; outdoor security light, window locks, window alarms, shed lock, gate lock, 5 lever mortis locks for the doors, a personal safety alarm, ultra violet pen, a baked bin safe tin thing and some stickers warning thieves of our safety features :) (i think that was all!)
