Sewing machine - thread keeps snapping

I'm with sandieb. Every time my machine keeps snapping the thread, I find that messing with the tension makes no difference, the only thing that helps is oiling it, The first time I needed to do it I was thinking it was an all night job but it was only 20 minutes. I didn't have sewing machine oil and I think I used WD40 and just sewed for a bit to make sure none of it got on the fabric. Certainly no more threads snapping
