SERPS - Can it be claimed...

Hi, just a quick query...

Basically, can a widow, claim the SERPS pension on behalf or the deceased?

If the widow earnes their own state pension and a small 'company' pension on behalf of the deceased, are they also eliganle to claim the SERPS top-up on behalf of the deceased as well (income permitting) and I am aware that it may be taxed??

Also, how would they go about looking into this or getting this sorted?

Cheers again.

  • Basically no.

You have your own pension, which will include any SERPS you, yourself earned. That continues as normal. Additionally, it seems you're getting the widow portion of the private pension. That's it.

I thought Serps does include a surviving spouse pension - see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Pensionsandretirementplanning/StatePension/DG_183780

I expect my wife to get 50% of my SERPS when I die, and of my Graduated Whateveritwas.
Free the dunston one next time too.

Yes she can. I will have my own full basic pension plus I am inheriting some of my late husband's SERPS according to my state pension forecast. I also receive a pension from his company.

If the widow does not already receive a full basic state pension on her own contributions she may be entitled to more by claiming on her husband's contributions.

    Contact the pension service.
