With a lot of them, it's the other way round - they refuse because your credit rating isn't pants enough. i.e. you qualify for an account which is capable of incurring charges, so they don't want to give you an account that can't.

How are you going about applying? If your doing it all online i would say go into a branch and then at least you will have someone face to face to talk to ;)

Are you on the electoral roll? Usually people are only declined if they are having trouble establishing your identity.

Aside from that are you aware of any fraud markers that could be recorded against you?

Check CIFAS for fraud markers and make sure that your ID is proveable.

I thought the point of a basic bank account is that there IS no credit check, so they shouldn't know that.

who was it with?? nationwide try to trick you into applying for the standard flext account and will tend to refuse to give you the basic acc form claiming 'its the same, they'l just check if you can get a full account first, if not you'll get the basic one'.

i have just opened a co-op cashminder, it was referred to their fraud dept first as my electoral roll says my mums as i moved back their after splitting with my wife, but i have just moved back and gave them the address of mine and my wifes house which held my application up i believe . so it might be worth checking all your details are up to date .

Make sure you are being put through for a basic account and not a normal account. Often you'll be put through for a normal account and obviously get rejected.

Halifax EasyCash account doesnt require a credit check. You have to go in branch and fill out a form (cant do it online) Its very good, still do direct debits/standing orders and I love their online banking! Very simple to use.
