Bit off topic, but my kettle automatically turns off after the water had been boiling for about 20s, so i just turn it off manually as soon as it starts boiling.

Along with filling it with only as much water as you need, should save a fair bit

Hi Beer, can be made from metallised bubble wrap.
I have three, for the teapot, kettle and flasks/slow cooker.
Just cut to correc t height, wrap around the kettle, glue together thus stick on a flat top.
Looks a bit Dr Who'ish. Perhaps stand on a piece of polystyrene. But have noticed that this latest teapot doesn't hold the heat anyway, so worth experimenting. It's called

I do this as well, all kettles seem to boil the water much much longer than needed, so I turn mine off much earlier than it would normally be finished.

Thanks for the info Ken, I'm a bit suprised that would stand up to boiling temps, isn't it plastic in there as well, or is it all foil?

Funnily enough my OH is a person who helps design new products, so we are talking about it.

I just had the idea sitting here of insulating my kettle.
Should keep it warmer between boilings and should in theory heat up quicker.

Any ideas how to do it?

I think a tea cosy might be set alight or something :D

Maybe some sort of fibreglass jacket, not that I really want FG anywhere near anything I consume.

I had the same idea! :-) While the kettle is boiling it's losing heat. This is utter insanity and so inefficient. If the heat that leaked had nowhere to go, it would have to stay in the water meaning it would take even less energy to heat it. One possible reason I could think of is that there may be pressure build up inside the kettle. Maybe it has to dissapate some of the heat to prevent pressure build up too fast?

pV=nRT?, my physics is rusty though, any thoughts? you could always look at a 'kelly kettle' seems clever :-)
