job interview payment help???

Hi guys.
Does anyone know if you can claim any money for travelling to an interview if you are full time employed?

I have done this once before when i was claiming Job Seekers Allowance, they help with a payment for petrol and hotel cost as i was travelling from up north to london.

I am having problems with work with a recent merger and this has resulted in me losing around £400 per month as i'm struggling at the mo to keep up with my payments.. therefore i cant really afford to spend money on far away interviews espec before christmas.

I have two interviews lined up in a couple of weeks again both in london, and i wondered if the job centre would be likely to help me fund going to them. I've managed to sort them so they are on consecutive days so i would only need to stay for 1 night, it'll just be a very early start on one of the days.

Any advice would be much appreciated. xxx

Unless the companies that you are applying to offer interview expenses, then no, you will not get help with them.
    Gone ... or have I?

But it is worth asking the potential employers if they are willing to refund expenses. They may only want to do this if you give them evidence so claiming from both would have to be half and half, I think. But always ask!

  • thanks for the replies.. the employers don't give any travelling expenses. Its for cabin crew and they all say they dont as they must interview so many people so its understandable.

It just seems unfair that they offer it to people who are unemployed and not those that are trying to get themselves a better job.

    thanks anyway

Come on, you should be able to sort out interview travel expenses yourself,
in the greater scheme of things.

How much are you expecting to spend ??
  • i already do work as cabin crew.

peter, basically what i earn at the mo just about covers the cost of my bills. i'm living in my overdraft and trying not to think how i'm gonna manage for xmas presents right now my money is that tight. i'm trying to avoid getting myself into more debt and instead of puttin the cost on a credit card wondered if there was anything i could claim for help.

why is it that they only offer the scallys on the dole help when half of them dont even want to work! its a joke!

oh and to answer your Q. petrol money from north to luton then onto heathrow, hotel then petrol home. you'll be surprised, it adds up!

I think you're being unreasonable here, not to mention uncomplimentary to anyone on this board who's currently unemployed and busting a gut to get back into work. It really isn't the government's responsibility to help people change jobs when they're already in employment. Don't you think we all pay enough in taxes as it is? Some organisations WILL help cover interview expenses, the ones you're applying to won't, that's life, moaning about it won't change it.

If you want help keeping your expenditure down there's the Debt Free Wannabe board. If you haven't yet changed your utility suppliers there's that board. The Old Style Board will help with reducing day to day expenses, and the Christmas Board should help with keeping the cost of Christmas down, even if that means reducing the expectations of those you celebrate with. Forgive me if you've already done all those things, but we're asked to be nice to other moneysavers, and I think that includes not making disparaging comments about a whole subset of people who would be 'naturals' for using this board in their search for work.

  • i'm only saying whats true... our system is a joke!

Its not just the lay abouts, its all the teenage girls aswell that are sat at home watching jeremy Kyle claiming because they've had a kid. Then honest people like me need a little help now and again and they are entitled to nothing!

'people busting a gut to get back to work' - are you serious?????? i don't believe that some people can't find a job, more like to proud to take on a !!!!!! job until something more like what they were looking for comes along.

If people want a job they can get one!

and for your info i've already been on the DFW board, This is just a cost I could do without right now. I dunno you try and get yourself into a better position in life an you just get knocked down, maybe I should go join the layabouts and claim willy nilly!!!

Not sure where all that's come from.

I think it says more about low wages, company & government policies, the cost of living.

-Low wages, kept down by company & government policies.
-Lack of employee power to negotiate.
-High council & government spending, little accountability.
-Cost of living, high cost of accomodation.
-Massive migration, keeping wages low or forcing them down.

-Wages don't meet cost of living, hey presto people are in debt.

    1) Not sure what government policy exists that keeps wages low? If we set a minimum wage of £20/hr almost all products would rise by a similar amount to cover the increase in operational costs. The obvious exception to it is the cheap imports which will then be even cheaper driving the few manufacturing companies in this country out of business.

    2) Why dont you have the power to negotiate? You and the employer have the ability to say yes or no. I have never taken any job without negotiating on the terms or the salary... havent always been 100% successful but have always found a middle ground with them.

    3) Certainly high spending but given that we elect the people that decide how it should be spent I cant agree on the no accountability.... dont like how your council run their budgets... dont vote for them.

    4) Typical vicious circles.... you want higher wages for everyone but you will then complain when the cost of living rises again. Accommodation is expensive but that is because buildings are expensive and that is simply because people are willing to spend that amount of money.... like everything, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

    5) Migration on the whole is low, only in relativity to previous years does it look high. I agree that these people will be having an impact on salaries within the limited areas that they tend to work in. Of cause the question is, if they are happy working for 1/2 the salary whilst having to pay the UK cost of living is it them or "us" that are wrong? The typical response people give is not wanting to have 3 generations of a family living in a 3 bed flat.... sounds to me that perhaps our expectations at times can be above our station and we try to spend to achieve something that is unrealistic?

    6) I think you have disproved this yourself with the comments on migration... salaries do not meet the cost of the standard of living that certain people want and therefore they get into debt to make the short fall. As an example, back in my claims days I had two friends both earning in the region of £15k, both single. One decided to rent a 2 bed house, took loans out for brand new furniture, got a car on HP and was he broke by the end of week 2 of the month and so lived off credit cards. Friend 2 rented a single room from a family, bought second hand furniture and had a car worth £200.. at the end of the month she was saving at least £300 into her ISA.

Is this the governments fault? Companies fault? Media's fault for creating a consumer culture? or is it simply that one person could budget and was sensible where as the other was useless with money, wanted instant gratification and had unrealistic expectations?
