Adventures in jam and marmalade making.... the great pan purchase

After ending up with a glut of apples last autumn the demonic duaghters and I discovered the delights of jam making which rapidly progressed to marmalade and chutney making simply because it was so incredibly easy and so much fun. So much so that rarely a wet weekend goes by without us attempting something delicous tasting.
Most of our disasters have been equipment related in that the biggest sucepan we own can't always contain the rapidly bubbling jam which appears to develop a mind of its own and attempts to escape at every opportunity. With that in mind I've decided to splurge on a jam pan but have discovered that its a veritable minefield with both bucket and wide mouth shapes as well as aluminuim, stainless steel, brass and copper and then theres the type of handle and the vast differences in capacity and price.
Is there anything I should avoid or anything thats essential?

Hi moo2moo,
This thread has some good advice:
Preserving pan? DO I need one? Recommendations?
I'll add your thread to it once you've had some more replies to keep the suggestions together.
