I received someone elses pension post!

Hiya, I was appalled to have received a letter today informing me of new laws to the pensions with regards to when I can start claiming a pension, according to my dob. (I'm not near pension age!). I thought the brown letter was from the CSA.

The address is correct, but the name and dob is someone else's.
I opened it (as i thought it was for me, address was correct), should I just send it back to pensions department? I imagine the ICO would be interested but I don't want to drop anyone in it.

Obviously this is a data protection issue! I have received someone elses personal information.

  • You're being a bit harsh there. If it didn't have your name on it, theoretically you shouldn't have opened it!

Possibly someone who used to live there before you?
  • Appalled to have opened someone else's post?

Wow, you must spend a lot of your time angry if this kind of thing annoys you!

It is illegal to open somebody else's mail. You should have just written 'not known at this address' on the envelope and put it back into a postbox.

this sounds exactly like what has been said, the policyholder lived there before you, moved and forgot to let their pension company know.
The best thing I can advise is to call the company, let them know that person does not live there anymore so they can record on their systems and ensure it does not happen again.
The company having not been informed are not mind readers and dont automatically know that someone has moved, they need to be informed.

Let common sense prevail here, the company didnt send the letter maliciously so theres no need to 'drop them in it' call them, you'll find theyll thank you for bringing it to your attention, ask you to return the letter or possibly destroy it and resolve the situation so it doesnt happen again.

    Simples!

Oh but we're supposed to be Trina. We often get mail returned with comments like "hasn't lived here for x years!! stop sending post you idiots" . So of course we must have known the person had moved even though we'd never been informed, we just sent the mail from malice & spite. Sheesh.

This happens sooo often when we do mail shots. Just mark the envelope as gone away and post it back.
If you don't, they will keep writing as they will know no different.
