I want to get my 11yr old son a printer for christmas but don't want to feel "ripped off" everytime we need new cartridges. He'll undoubtedly be doing colour prints more than black & white. So can anyone advise on any makes / models to consider.

I have a HP a canon and a epson photo printer. The replacements for the epson are cheap but they don't have a long working life at all - our last one lasted 2 years with minimum use. The canon is good and again the cartridges are relatively cheap - dependant on what cartridges you are using. The HP - and I know ppl will probably disagree here because the cartridges cost so much more but it is reliable and the actual cartridges are bigger thus holding more ink! We use it for bulk everyday printing really. Have also got an old HP printer in the loft that must be at least 15 years old and lent it to a friend a while ago after hers broke and it worked fine! Got to also mention Brother - whilst I don't have one they are meant to be the most energy efficient and you can get replacement cartridges really cheap - my mum has got one and is really pleased with it - she even knows how it works! so may be worth looking into.
https://www.ebuyer.co.uk always has some good deals or https://www.dabs.co.uk but make sure you check the price of cartridges!0 -
This may not fit your requirements but you can buy 2 Dell 725 printers delivered for about £27 at present, that is £27 in total for both, with cartridge.
They only use a single cartridge which is about £14 to buy from Dell, but if you buy these two they would probably last best part of a year and simply recycle them if you don't want to pay the new cartridge price.
If you do follow this route make sure to put "2" in the quantity box.0 -
i have a cannon ip2000 printer which i think is really good and i only paid £49.99 for it
it has a colour and a black cartridge and you can pick up the cartridges for £1 each on ebay and they do a lot of prints per cartridge
