I'm employed and doing freelance work too - how do I work out tax roughly?

I would just register on-line now, and wait and see what happens. Apply for the NI exemption too. Not sure how far you can stretch the "starting as SE".
Your 10/11 return is due 31st October 2011 on paper, or 31st January 2012 on-line.....with the tax due by the same date.
So do the return a bit early if you can and make sure you have enough laid by for the tax.0 -
Thank you all for your help, useful and enlightening as I had hoped!0

Do you really want to complicate your life so much for a few quid and forever have the damn tax man on your case ? I would seriously consider what you are thinking about doing as once you tell them, you cannot retract anything. The right thing is not always the right thing to do.0
