Strange Q, but does anyone work in PR?

I've worked in Public Relations for about 5 years and I'm wondering whether I could do any freelance PR in my own time to earn extra money to reduce my debt.

I can't earn any over time pay in my job (only lieu time), but wondered if I could do something on the side. I appreciate that I'll have to look into getting tax sorted etc if I do get work. Do you think it's worth it...was wondering about putting a little ad in our local free (and very popular) paper and maybe some of the businesses in the town would be interested...I could write their releases, editorial and proof read/sub for them from home in the evenings or weekends.

Is it a crazy idea or could it work...?

I think it's a good idea SkintMonkey and I used to work in communications/PR. Only thing is that many local business people may not understand the value (financial and otherwise) of good PR, and those that do, may be using larger companies on an as-and-when basis. Why not do some investigating, starting with the Chamber of Commerce in your town?:money: :)

Thanks...thing is that although I do believe I'm good at what I do, I'm not sure what I'd charge and how to go about targetting people. Contacting them directly or putting in an advert? I feel a bit daunted by it a bit, so may have to think more about my plan of action....eventually I would like to go freelance, so this would be a good time to dip my toe in the water. I need to think about it more though....

Only thing to check is that your contract with your employer doesn't forbid it - quite a lot of companies do unfortunately.

Having said that, I know the company I work for would love to use someone like you. Not having to pay big company inflated prices would encourage a lot of small businesses to start looking into it I'm sure. We had some PR work done by a company local to us, but were charged £600 a day - unfortunately at that price our budget ran dry long before we began to see a benefit.
