I need desperately a board to put up for the freezer contents. DH couldn't find spinach in there yesterday and I *know* a blip means we have 7 bags (I can't reach the bottom:o). The pad on top method didn't work as it kept falling down the back.
I'm bit wary of white boards because of the shadowing and then eventual cracking of the surface, but black boards are darker and chalk can be hard to find.
I'm thinking of tryig blackboard paint....is there any reason other than the darkness and chalk finding (mine now is from a toyshop) to choose a white board over this?

I have an Ikea glass board* for the same purpose. Like you the downsides of a whiteboard or a blackboard didn't appeal. The glass is tempered and has a very slight blue/green tint to it, wipes clean with no trouble and any works with any non-perm whiteboard-type marker.
After it'd be up for a while I had the OH take it back down so I could tape printed labels to the back so it's now sub-divided to contain a section for the freezer contents, another for this week's menu plan, an area where I can list stuff that needs using up this week etc etc. For about 15€ it was an absolute bargain.
* We actually have two; the first one was so useful that we got another. It is in the utility room and has a running list of DIY jobs and the like on it.

FABULOUS idea! never seen or heard of these. They are smaller than I was planning, but could have a few...meat/veg/dairy (my freezer is really a small country). I'll send that link to DH and ask what if he likes them too.0

I used to have a chalk blackboard in the kitchen and switched to a magnetic whiteboard. The main reason for the change was that the chalk dust was very messy on the floor or anything sitting under the blackboard.
Since changing I have discovered that the whiteboard is better in other ways: it's much easier to clean properly and easier to write neatly on - chalk means your writing has to be much bigger to be legible.
I imagine that the same applies to the glass board mentioned above.

I don't have a blackboard, but I use liquid chalk markers on my glass jars so I know what's in them. Just like using a regular marker, but doesn't rub off as easily. Can be used on whiteboards as well.0

I've got some self-adhesive blackboard sticker thingies... I was going to use them on the wall, but on the freezer sounds a MUCH better idea!0

Piece of note paper and a fridge magnet or two works for me. Cross things out as they're used.Freebies Received: Supersavvyme bag, Olay moisturiser, Barbara Daly/Tesco Mascara, Seeds of Change Choccie, Yorkshire Tea Kenyan teabags, Tesco mobile sim cards x 2.

Ahh, now that's incredibly good idea too. More space saving. I would go for those if I thought my cats would stay of the freezer and not rub out things from the list with their naughty little feet (its en route t the window to the outside.:o)0 -

I'd go for a white board, they're clearer to read and you can buy inexpensive light ones. If you have a white freezer you could even write on it with white board pens if it's the right surface.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0
