LA or Las Vegas for longer?

Options
My boyfriend and I are planning on going away on the 16th November and returning on the 1st December. We're staying in San Diego with my uncle from the 23rd Nov so we're there for Thanksgiving. My plan was to go to LA from the 16th to the 21st and then to Las Vegas from the 21st - 23rd. I'm now confused though after spending too much time on the Las Vegas thread and wondering if I should change the times and take a day off LA and add an extra one on to Las Vegas? We've never been to either of these places, and I've only been to America once, and my boyfriend hasn't at all.

We'll hopefully be arriving in LA at 1.15pm on the 16th and then were going to fly out to Las Vegas early on the 21st so we have the most time in each place.

We're both 21 years old and want to do a lot of sightseeing etc when we go away so do yous think I should stick with the original plan or go to Las Vegas for the extra day?

LA is a hole. Drive through it and up Highway 1 to San Francisco and spend the time there instead.

As I am a regular on the Vegas thread I guess I am bias but FWIW,def longer in Vegas. LA is so BIG and sprawling and full of trafic jams.

What is it you want to see in LA

I must say I agree about San Francisco being much more interesting than LA... I'd add the extra day to Las Vegas so that you can sightsee the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon they are really not to be missed...

I'm another one who is biased but really it's down to what you want to see and do in/near LA. For me San Diego, Santa Monica, a quick Hollywood tour and Disneyland and I'm done. The only thing I skipped was a concert to see Liza Minelli at the Hollywood Bowl-that I regret but at the time the air quality was evil due to fires in California (although I got scolded by Marie Osmond for wimping out when I got to Vegas :rotfl::rotfl:)

For me Vegas has shows, gambling, pool , nightlife, shopping, more food choices and no long drives in heavy traffic in between.

Really it's down to what you class as vacation must-dos

and another biased Vegas fan...we've been to LA twice, once for 3 nights once for 1 night and in both cases it was enough (the second time was to see a friend who lives there and we flew into LAX for this purpose alone). no significant interest in going back, and yet we haven't done most of the big touristy things (not been to Mann's Chinese Theatre, not been to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, etc).

I suppose it depends what you are after, but like some others, we think Vegas has more than enough to keep us busy.

Trip 16 or 17 coming up next week...we normally stay 8-9 nights and that's just about right for us.

But ultimately everyone is different and I do know some people who think more than a couple of nights in Vegas is too much. :)

I definitely agree. The coast is beautiful. But there are still beautiful places in Southern California. You can go to Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, Malibu, Ventura and Santa Barbara. Las Vegas might be very cold when you go there.
  • i was in vegas from nov 29-dec 6th , it was wear a thin coat weather but sunny , as far as im concerned theres so much to do in vegas its impossible to get round , you dont stand a hope in hells chance so the longer the better IMO
  • I went to San Fransisco last summer for 2 days and saw Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf etc, but my boyfriend's interested in seeing it so we might go there next summer instead.

I'd like to see the walk of fame, ripleys believe it or not, madame tussauds and other such things, universal studios for a day, and then I'm considering Disney for the day. I would really like to go and see some of the beaches though as well. We also wanted to go and see a basketball game in the Staples Center one night, and were going to see if we could get tickets to one of the live shows filmed at Paramount studios as well. Do all these things sound like they could take a while? I'm not too sure how long it takes to get around LA and see all the sites. We aren't renting a car or anything, just going to get the tour buses around these places, and the hotel I've chosen is right round the corner from the Kodak Theatre etc so we can just walk to there.
  • Also, I think I'm just going to throw in here that I am one of those people who watches a lot of american TV like the OC and 90210 so seeing LA just makes me want to go there badly just to see for myself! I also get really excited about anything american so I just want to see as much as possible and not miss anything out. Last time I went I got excited just going to the supermarket haha.
