Spadoosh - I think you do yourself a disservice. Why should hard working couples like yourselves only be able to buy some crack den in the middle of new Beirut?
I think its a rubbish state of affairs myself. Still, its not really my problem since I can afford a house in a decent area.
Be under no illusion though - you are probably worse off due to the housing boom presided over by New Labour.0 -

Oh please. £110k will buy a 2 bed property in commuting distance of London (long-ish commute) or a 1 bed with a shorter commute. And it'll buy more than that elsewhere in the country.
There has ALWAYS been regional variation in house prices. If you think that all FTBs should be able to afford a 3-bed semi anywhere they like then you're dreaming.0 -

Another thing I've noticed is that people are still asking silly prices. I think we have priced our house at a realistic level ....
The thing is, everybody thinks their asking price is realistic.
The bulk of sellers probably fall into three categories: upsizers, downsizers & forced-sales (due to debt, divorce etc). The first two will not drastically drop their price because they need the money to upsize or to release capital. As they often have little choice, there are bargains to be had from the forced-sellers.Marching On Together
I've upped my standards...so up yours!

I think you are being totally unrealistic. The average age of a first time buyer is now 38! Most likely the circumstances of people this age will mean a 1/2 bed property will be totally unsuitable. So yes, it could be said that FTBs of average age should be able to buy a 3 bed house in a reasonable area.0 -

I'm surprised you missed out the gold plated toilet seat.0 -
Sorry op, not quite sure how your "telling the truth as you see it". Me and my g/f are ftb's and are in the process of looking at houses. We've had a mortgage agreed in principle. And saved up over the last year a healthy deposit. Were looking at spending 110000k with about a 12.5% deposit. we are both on a relatively low income (probably slightly less then average combined) and have had no problems getting a mortgage agreed. I do agree with you that houses may be overpriced and sellers seem to have very little movement in asking prices but to say people can not get houses is ludicrous. you simply do not meet the lending criteria or are being too picky with the houses you are looking at. by the sounds of it you dont have a large enough deposit to be able to get a mortgage (90% ltv) and youve got to ask why would someone be willing to lend you more than this? its not fair to ask the bank to lend you 100% (which it sounds like your asking for, could be wrong and appologies if i am) but be realistic if your not willing to pay a percentage, why would a lender?
I wish you all the luck in the world:)0 -

Are there any stats on what type of property FTBs at different ages typically buy? How do we know that 25 year old FTBs are buying the same as 38 year old or 50 year old FTBs?0

Careful, what if it turned out that some of the properties FTBs would buy are also being bought by divorc!es after they split up? We would have more foaming at the mouth rants against them.
They might then work out that the cause of divorce is actually marriage.
I can just picture some poor couple having their wedding day ruined by some mad workman foaming at the mouth and gabbering on about Hitler and reptiles.0
