    So if a £100,000 a year salary earner slips into negative equity on a £400,000 house do they have more disposable income to repay it? Not necessarily.

    When the mortgage is higher then obviously the income would need to be higher to support it. 10% of 50k for a low wage earner would be the same in relative terms as 10% of 400k for a higher earner. Both would have passed affordability checks and be deemed to be able to support the mortgage.

    Earning more does not necessarily mean more disposable income. The risk of negative equity would be there but as long as the mortgage is affordable then there is no huge problem.

  • we are looking at this mortgage as well - is it 6.19% fixed?

    MissMayflower27 - All went through ok today at 5.45% fixed for 2 years. The surveyer went in this morning so we're just waiting for confirmation on that.
