NVQ Assessor

Hi I am thinking about becoming an NVQ assessor in Childcare. With a diploma in childcare and working as a nanny plus many other childcare positions I now work 4hrs a day as a nanny and thinking its something I would like to do.
I've done my research and found I need to gain the A1 NVQ assessor qualification.
Can anyone recommend some good companies to do it through
and/or if you have done it yourself can you give me some feedback on the course?
thank you louisa

Hi Louisa, I have just quailified as an NVQ assessor but in Admin. One of our local providers who assess NVQ's in the workplace usualy also do the A1 assessor course. Would be worth looking to see if you can get some funding to do the course as it is quite expensive. Learn direct might be able to help also.
Sorry it is not much but hope it helps. Worth also asking where you did your other childcare qualifications.0 -
Local Further Education colleges and adult education providers might offer this as a short course.0

What level of qualification do you have and do you have any NVQs?0
-
Not sure if the qualification has changed, but when a colleague of mine did his D32/D33 (the old A1) is was assessed on a experience/hands on basis. I.e. it was an on the job qualification.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

I think ONW was asking what level of qualification you have - using the national qualifications framework. What is the full title of the diploma? Who awarded it? Is it equivalent to a Level 3 qualification (like 'A' levels)?0 -
Diploma usually refers to Level 3 as the certificate is usually level 2 - well this is how CACHE works anyway.0

I completed the theory elements of the NVQ A1 Assessors course, however, to attain the qualification you need candidates to assess.
Unfortunately, my training provider (absolutely useless) could not find me any candidates to assess so I could not complete the course. Some employers may also require assessors to have completed a PTTLS course (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong- Learning Sector) which is a basic teaching qualification.
I was also offered that course (both via jobcentre) but was a pointless exercise without the Assessors award.
It was unbelievable how many totally unsuitable candidates were sent by the jobcentre as the majority fell at the first hurdles when having to complete a maths and English test. What a waste of money.
What I did discover that those who were undertaking the course in health & social care were able to complete the award as there seemed to be an abundance of candidates for those people to assess.0 -
Most colleagues/training centres will rubber stamp you through.
I've known D32 assessor portfolios to be run off en masse on photocopiers then personalisedFeudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

I have to state that the impression I got was that the whole NVQ thing could be open to abuse - not just gaining the assessors award but giving a NVQ award to a candidate.
Maybe it is just me being cynical.
Having helped a former colleague gain his NVQ level 2, it really was very basic stuff and I was certainly surprised at the standards required to achieve the award.
It certainly is no surprise that many people suggest that NVQ stands for not very qualified!0
