Pc Keeps Shutting Down When I'm On The Internet

Any assistance gratefully received!

My pc keeps shutting down after I have been on the internet for about 40 - 60 minutes. It shuts down earlier if I have music, or on-line radio playing in the background. The error message says that it is a stop error caused by an unknown device driver. I have had the machine checked out by a so called expert but the problem still continues. Is it possible to get rid of this expletive deleted driver by getting rid of everything on the pc so to speak (after having saved all my important docs etc) and then starting afresh - and if so, how do I go about it. Sorry if this is not clear, and also that it is not expressed in technical language - as you will no doubt have gathered I know b - all about computers.

Also, any idea why the clock on the pc would keep losing 8 hours every couple of weeks - it just keeps resetting itself.

Thanks.

If it doesn't fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed replacement anyway

    there for me ??

How To Replace The CMOS Battery In Your PC Most PC users don't think much about the CMOS battery until their computer shows signs of losing its BIOS settings on boot up. If you tend to upgrade rather than replace your PC, replacing the CMOS battery every couple of years makes sense.
Likewise, if you purchase a used PC, battery replacement is a good idea unless the PC is less than two years old. It's just one more preventive step you can take to prevent troubles in the future.
If you have never replaced a CMOS battery before, you can find step-by-step instructions below.
In most cases, frequent CMOS errors are a sign of a dead battery. The CMOS battery maintains your settings while your PC is powered off. You can easily replace the battery yourself.
    Difficulty Level: medium
    Time Required: 10 minutes

    Instructions:
    1. Boot your PC and enter its setup mode.
    2. Write down all of the settings from the various BIOS menus. Click this link to learn more about this procedure.
    3. Power off your PC.
    4. Open the case of your computer

cmosreplace_5.jpgFigure 5. Typical CMOS battery. The most common type of batteries used in modern PCs is coin-shaped lithium/manganese-dioxide battery that looks like a large watch battery.
    6. Obtain a replacement battery from a local or online computer parts dealer.
    7. Remove the old battery.

    8. Replace it with the new one, as shown on the picture below.

    9. Document the date of replacement for future reference.
    10. Replace the case and power on the PC.
    11. Enter the setup mode of your PC.
    12. Reenter the settings you have written down from the various setup menus.
    Tips:
    1. Don't forget to observe proper anti-static precautions when working inside the case of your PC.
    2. If you can't see your battery right away, try removing expansion cards or unplugging cables. The majority of newer motherboards use lithium batteries that look like large watch batteries.

    Thanks Browntoa,

I'll have a shot at this in the morning when my brain is somewhat clearer!

If the worst comes to the worst what kind of cost would be involved in replacing the motherboard, and is it something a non computer literate person could undertake?

For some reason the usual header to my screen has now vanished from the window, and clicking on links in the text no longer has any effect - I have to copy the link and paste it into the 'internet address box' (oh how I wish I knew what I was talking about!) myself each time.

I've had enough for now. I'm going to have a strong drink, and a lie down in a darkened room.

I would think on a PC 5 years old that you may find a cheap replacement motherboard on ebay of the same type but if not a socket 775 board plus a new processor would give your change out of £100...but you may not be able to re-use your existing RAM so the costs start to mount...

  • Thanks again, Browntoa, I'll have a shot at changing the battery as soon as I get a new one.

In the meantime can you advise what might be causing the 'in-text' links not to work - the cursor changes to the usual hand sign when I click on the link, but the link does not connect.

Also, grateful if you would suggest a good computer book for starters like me. I would like to find out more about the hardware as well as software side, so that when things go wrong I have some idea of what may be causing it. (I know I wouldn't be able to remedy faults myself, but not having a clue as to what is going on is driving me round the bend!)

found this (they ar called Hyperlinks)

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/ietopten.mspx

Hyperlinks will not work if a computer system does not know which Web browser is set as the default, which happens if the settings that control this choice are damaged or incorrect. The easiest way to fix the problem is to allow your preferred Web browser to rewrite the appropriate settings by resetting your default browser. Rather than walk through the steps required to achieve this in this column, I refer you to my previous column about how to set up your browser as the default.

I tend to just use google to search for the problem if I do not know to tell you the truth :)
