in Cutting tax
I was wondering if someone here could offer me some advice.
I am currently on a gap year, planning to go to University in September.
It's not the most exciting gap year, I'm just working part time and studying at a local college doing a part time course (to keep my mind ticking over, and to make my gap year look half productive on my personal statement).
I have a few odd jobs during the week, doing bits and bobs for people ... bit of cleaning, etc.
I have worked out that not in a single week will I get more than £80 a week in total.
My question is, I know I don't have to pay tax on this as this is under the limit BUT do I still need to declare it and if so, to whom?
My mum was the one who brought this up, she thinks I need too, but my father says it's nothing to worry about, I am not earning more than the limit so do not worry.
I was just wondering if anyone here knew?
Many thanks!
Danny

You're OK. You do not need to bother HMRC unless you are actually liable to tax.
This is a link to the relevant legislation.
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1970/9/section/7/enacted
As you can see on that website that is the original legislation and the up to date version is not available but the only thing that has changed is that the time limit is now 6 months.0 -
But even if you don't need to tell them, if it was me I'd keep a file/notebook with details of what I'd earned - it would be quite easy to earn a bit more than you'd expected in the year, and find that you've gone over the personal allowance, so if you have a record it will make it much easier if you do need to fill in a tax return.0

Phew! Thanks Guys!
And I've done that exact same thing tyll, I have a document on my computer which I state all my taxable income, this was mainly because I was not sure if I had to declare it or not, so I thought I'd write everything down, but I'll still carry on doing it!
Thank's to both of you!0
