Alternative to Buckwheat Flour?

I want to cook oven baked onion bhaji's and the recipe that was recommended on this site uses Buckwheat Flour.

Im not sure how easy this is to get so i wanted to see if there was an alternative i could use if i cant find this?

Any help would be great

Thanks

Traditionally onion bhajis are made with chickpea/gram flour and that's what I always use. I've never heard of them being made with buckwheat flour.

I use that recipe too but use gram flour, it's easier to get hold of and the bhajis turn out wonderfully.

What recipe is everyone on here using? I would like a bahji (sp?) recipe you can oven bake rather than deep fry! Or even shallow fry. I'm not into big pans of oil lying around.

I would use gram flour too, available from any good ethnic supermarket. I'm also wanting to try making pakoras!

I'll merge this with our replacement thread later

    Zip :)

If you look at the comments there are lots of questions about using chickpea [gram] flour instead. Save buckwheat for pancakes - gram flour for bhajis all the way!
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

That would explain why when I made some oven baked falafel for the first time the other day, theire taste and texture was remarkably like onion bhaji as I think I overdid the curry spices. I didn't realise chick pea flour was the usual ingredient in Bhajis.

I am definately going to set out to make an onion bhaji mix in future using mashed up chick peas and just a tablespoon on flour to bind the onion mixture together - much more practical for baking in the oven, and much lower points when following Weight Watchers.

I'm going to have to have a go at this. I'm on a diet (again) and I love onion bhajis but have temporarily retired my deep fat fryer until I'm thin again :D
