now call me cynical but Im having a new kitchen fitted and am thinking about buying an induction hob.
My joiner tells me that he only needs the thickness of the worktop for clearance.
Given that the worktop is 38mm and the website where the hobs are say 'clearance required is 50mm' am I missisng something
(underneath the hob will be a built in oven in a housing
(not hardwired)

Ours is a De Dietrich and the instructions re worktop state, "Space needed under worktop, 63.3mm."
It also mentions an "air entry" in the left or right hand side of the oven unit, and an installation kit for other than a De Dietrich oven.
And says, "Important: If an oven is located under your hob, the thermal safety devices on the hob will prevent its simultaneous use when the oven is in a pyrolysis mode."
Don't ask me what that means
This is for our De Dietrich, but may be relevant for other makes.
Might I suggest you get hold of an installation manual for the hob you have chosen?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

Yes, I'll do that thank you
I'll also google Pyrolysis too.;)make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

An induction hob should have a fan underneath and will use the cooker point electrics as it needs this power. The oven can use ordinary electrics if it is a single oven. I have a Neff single oven & induction hob above built in with a 40mm work top. Think the issue beneath the hob is with metal parts being accessible beneath the work top need a specific fitting. As you are putting an oven there I think your chippy is correct & there should be no problems.
Just make sure you have the right pans & be prepared for total heat control of simmering, boiling or even melting chocolate directly in a saucepan.
