Have you thought of going into teaching? With a degree its relatively easy to get into. It might be worth researching if you are interested and there is always a shortage of teachers so easy to find a job. A local school might be willing to take you straight away while you train. I work in a school and teachers train as they work, some of them apparently without teaching qualifications, just a degree.

  • Thanks for all your help. I received another letter today giving me 5 days to pay or the "may take further action" against me. I'd say over half of the £550 I owe them is there charges - £30 everytime money left my account. I know it was an unauthorised amount over my £2000 overdraft but is there anything I can do about these penalties?

Thanks again for all your help :)

    Wayhay! Chrissie's back! :)

The key thing is your bank can't take what you havent got. Write back and tell them you have no income and would like them to give you more time. If they still refuse then ask them to accept a repayment plan where you pay what you can afford every month until it's paid off.

Have you got another bank account yet? This is essential as your bank could withdraw overdraft at any time which would leave you with no money and bouncing Direct Debits!

  • I've managed to borrow £500 off a family member which gave me a bit of relief as I really want to avoid getting into trouble at all costs but I need to wait until they can get me the money and then the cheque to clear, which will be more than 5 days. The fact is I called them as soon as I got the letter but this one today claims I haven't bothered trying to sort things out.

I want to open a new account and possibly transfer my authorised overdraft to it, as I can't wait to see the back of Halifax but as I have no income at the moment, I'm not sure If they will let me. I'm still hoping to find a job before I retire!

 Argh... yet another moan... I paid the £500 that they needed and now am indebted to a family member for life   which is not a good thing. I'm still trying to find a job to get at least some money in and I check today and the  b's  have charged me another £61 in interest and charges to send me over the limit again. There's no way I can afford it this time. I feel like I'm back where I started :(

Couldn't you sell your dog? ;) only joking :D

Seriously though, you need to break the cycle of charges taking you overlimit and causing you charges. Can you work out exactly what you need to find to stop being charged anymore? (ie charges plus amount to make sure you dont go overlimit next time). Then you have a goal you need to find.

I thought I should update this thread now that I've got some time. Things haven't gotten much better for me, as 3 days after my last message here my mother suffered a moderate stroke and was in hospital for 6 weeks. She is home now but I don't honestly think I can leave her on her own at the minute.

I am now claiming JSA (initially I thought I would be able to work when she came home but I'm not so sure now, plus if I tried to claim for Carer's allowance we would somehow be £40 a week less well off which we cannot afford). I'm in a panic that they will bite back about the JSA, even though I've been applying for jobs since with no luck whatsoever.

I have so many debts and so little money to pay them with, which keeps me awake at nights with worry. This is most of my SOA:

    Income ATM
    JSA £46.00/week

    Outgoings
Talk Talk phone bill - £35/month
    Next Catalogue - £17/month
    Reliable Collections - £30/month* (Balance £1,600)
    Halifax Overdraft - £40/month (Balance still £1997)
    Argos - £13/month
    Littlewoods Direct - $15/month
    Egg Card - £20/month (Balance £504)
    Sky - £15/month

*I was originally paying £80/ month to these 2 catalogues (now merged under Reliable Collections) and now pay £15 each per month, which I arranged by writing to them. However they charged a 10% arrangement fee on both accounts for this and also charge around £31.60 in credit charges per month, so I end up with the balance increasing by £1.60 per month.

Its so bad that although my mum has many debts to pay herself from her pension, she has to give me some to keep my head above water and we've hardly any money left for food.

Sorry if I've rambled on, but I'm really sick of living like this. My mother has always had problems with money and I think her bad habits have rubbed off on me.

Any help you could give would be very greatly appreciated.

The phone bill and sky are the obvious two to try and get rid of/reduce.

I would go back to the welfare offices and sit there till they work out what you're entitled to, and that includes home nursing care for your mother.

In terms of jobs, just keep applying, it's almost summer, so I'm guessing that Travel and Tourism will shortly be getting busier.
