Carrot and Swede Mash

Apologies if all you OSers already know this but I just made carrot and swede for tonights tea and I hate mashing it - it always goes a bit watery and takes ages and is still a bit "lumpy", so I put it into a bowl and just blitzed it with my hand held blender. It didn't go watery and is lovely and smooth, but not babyfood smoot - just right! I was so thrilled I did the same for my potatoes and they were done just right too! Thought I would share this tip!

Have you tried adding chopped (fresh) coriander, butter and black pepper to the carrot and swede mix - wonderful!
The best thing I have found for mashing is a potato ricer that I bought in Lakeland.
Hope you had a good tea!0 -
I usually use an electric whisk but could do with a hand blender as I would probably use that a lot more than I do a whisk and its usually hidden at the back of the cupboard.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Thats a great tip because I too have this problem when I try to mash carrot and swede. I thought the veg might 'jump' out the bowl and ruin the blades if I used my hand blender on them, so will give it a try this weekend. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.:kisses3:0

I put it in a tall narrow bowl - its an old microwave bowl jug which holds about 1.5 litres. The veg didn't move about at all really, but I blended in short bursts only.Jane

blimey its never even occured to me to use the hand blender
i'm usually bending my masher up trying to get them relatively smooth, i shall give it a go!
:snow_grin:It only seems kinky the first time.. :A0 -
I always use my stick blender for this, a;lso makes lovely creamy mashed spuds butbe careful not to overdo it or you'll get slop!:eek:Do what you love :happyhear0

I've been buying Aunt Bessies as I have never got mashing carrots and swede right. I shall definitely give this a go,but not this weekend as we have 10 for Sunday lunch and my nerves won't stand an experiment!earn what you can, save what you can, give what you can :hello:0

I often cook a potato or two in with the carrot and swede, makes it go further and makes the texture better too when mashed with a little milk and butter. Cut it all into similar sized chunks first before cooking.0

I prefer to use the hand whisk rather than the stick blenders ( :shhh: that's how dinner ladies would make mash :silenced: ) As taplady points out, try not to over do it with the stick blender because it will go to pulpy slop. I find I have a bit more control making mash with the electric whisk and it gets all the lumps out
Oh and one more thing, the type of potato will make a difference too! A powdery potato is best. Some potato varieties will give a slimey consistency and that's not nice~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
