carpet shampooer

I know this is more of a 'I want to buy it' posting but. I figured that anything to do with cleaning this was the forum to come to.
Our carpet is badly in need of shampooing, doggy and dd2 'accidents' are begining to make a bit of a pong despite all the vinegar, bio washing powder and bicarb, I can throw at it.
Rather than hire a big bulky machine I am considering buying an upright carpet shampooer probably this
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=574672
I figured that after a few uses it will have paid for itself, especially if I can use some of my catalogue discount on it. ( BTW does anyone understand the empire stores system of allocating discount to its 'valued customers') and of course buy now and pay later.
Does anyone have one of these machines or recomend anything else.
Thanks, Alison

I have that machine but have never used it as was worried about getting the carpet too wet. Whats it like? Have you any tips on its use?
Thanks VivWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0 -

I have one of these too. It does leave the carpet damp but it is usually dried by the next day.0

Thanks to all the above, sorry for delay but PC died on me. Bought the above machine, 25% discount from Empire stores. Seems to do the job very well. Bringing loads of muck out of the carpets,(yuk) leaves them slightly damp but soon dries. Having problems getting rid of the smell wher my daughter spilt the potty and didn't tell me. probably need to get some special shampoo for that. Would recomend this machine.0

By some coincidence this is exactly the same machine my dh bought without asking me/telling me beforehand - from Argos too - on the same date more or less. Surprised, I googled it to find out more and discovered it was on offer from Tesco Direct for £30 less! - so got him to take it back and bought it off Tesco instead. We've used it and have likewise been impressed with its cleaning power - water was dark brown , yuck! - but found embedded stains needed to be given an extra scrub by hand to get stains out. Dry by next day - unfortunately, 4 year old walked across it in muddy wellies within minutes! but still looks a lot better than before. Would recommend it too - esp if can get it from Focus for 100 quid!0
