Do You Keep/Intend to Keep Anything to Remind You Of Your Debt?

Options
We paid off our debt about a year ago but it was a long painful, arduous process of taking out different 0% credit cards and paying off what we could each month. Some months we could manage hardly anything and those months were particularly difficult.

Now that we are debt free it has felt wonderful for a whole year and I never ever want to go through that process again. Therefore I decided before I paid it off that I should never forget what it felt like to be in debt. I decided to keep every single credit card statement with every credit card known to man (just about). I've kept it all in the box where I keep the bank statements so I have to take it out frequently. The box is very heavy because of all the cc statements and I have a bad back but lifting it is my reminder of what it felt like having that millstone around my neck and seeing all those statements in there which I will never throw away is my reminder of how long it took to repay it all. Just in case I'm tempted to take out a loan! (not).

What I am saying is once you have paid off your debt as I am sure you all will it is a good idea to keep something very bitter in the house and not completely forget about how it feels so that you are not tempted again. It really does work.

  • What a good idea!

I became debt free in the middle of January, but I'm not sure what to keep.

I'll have a think, and report back.

Well done on your success too.

I'll be keeping my 2 lever arch files of debt related correspondence - firstly to prove its all paid etc and secondly as a reminder of what I've been through!! Not going there again; I should be debt free in May - cant wait!!!!!!!!!! :)

I remeber when I paid off my student loan, I put the statement on the fridge with a big red heart around the zero balance. Hoping to do that again soon.
