Essentially I think visiting the lakes and looking for somewhere lovely to go is dependent on where you are going.
Keswick is probably the most beautiful place (IMHO) with plenty of great fell walks (Latrigg, Skiddaw [if you fancy a tough one], Castlehead [if you are with kids], Walla Crag) - There is a great lake and theatre in Keswick and plenty of opportunities to do touristy type things (hire a rowing boat on the lake etc)
Grasmere is beautiful for a nice walk around the village and has a fantastic Gingerbread shop which you MUST visit if you like gingerbread - its TINY TINY TINY but soooooo nice
I would avoid Workington, Whitehaven, Carlisle, Penrith as I feel they are a bit on the scruffy side.
