Tesco: small packages work out cheaper

Options
Not sure if this is the right place to say it, but every time I shop in Tesco, I seem to find a product where the cost is cheaper for multiple small packages than the larger package.

Today it was black peppercorns - £1.07 for 100g packs, or £3.05 for the 275g pack (4p more per 100g).

This kind of thing happens so often, it seems like a deliberate policy... especially considering the fine margins they work to and the centrally controlled pricing system

  • I've noticed this with things before, I do a lot of baking and always check the pence per 100g for things like flour and icing sugar - a few weeks ago it was cheaper to buy two 500g icing sugars than it was to get one 1kg box of exactly the same product.

Although not quite as annoyed as I was when I realised that the Tesco standard soft brown sugar was MORE expensive than the Tesco Fairtrade soft brown sugar - for exactly the same quantity. That just irritated me as if they can offer fairtrade at a lower price, they must be making a substantial profit on the standard one (and guess which one was placed most prominently on the shelves?!)

You're conveniently ignoring the fact that the 6 pack is usually £3 and the 12 pack is usually £6, but currently they are both on offer. Sometimes these offers get crosswired and you have to do some VERY simple mental arithmetic to make sure you're getting the amount you require for the best price.

The only real discrepancy there is with the 3 packs being 25p more that buying 3 singles, but again this is explained by confused promotion.

The promotion ends on 1st March, so it will get confused again.

Tescos red lentils ( in the wholefood section) are cheaper per 100gms, in the 500gm pack than the 1kg pack.

Tesco are really bad for this, especially 'refills' that have less packaging.

You have the freedom to choose the cheaper option if you like. This is not the case with non-special-offer multi-buys.

I like the ones that say for instance £1.40 each or buy 2 for £3.00!!
  • I have always believed you need a Mathematics Degree to shop at Tesco because they price all their various products individually and increase/decrease them according to popularity or because item is not selling as well as it might hence my decision to shop in Waitrose by preference cos it's transparent pricing and overwhelming qaulity.
