Have I overpaid tax?

Hi new to the site, just wondering if anyone could help me I'm very confused about my tax situation!
Since April '10 I've had a fair few jobs and I'm pretty sure I've been placed on the wrong tax code for all of them!
I was a student working in a pub till May paying no tax - can't remeber what my code was.
Then I started 2 jobs on exactly the same day (one day & one night over the weekends) I was put on BR for both jobs - is this correct?
I stopped one of the jobs (behind a bar to work behind another bar) and picked up a second job some time in September. I was put on BR for that job too.
Then I left both jobs in January this year and now work full time - I've been put on a 647L W1 M1 tax code.
I received a letter from HMRC telling me they did not know my current situation even though I have been ringing them and send numerous letters. I sent a letter outlining all of this to them - just waiting for a reply.
In all my jobs I have not earned above £6000 all together because I was on a low wage so all these times I have been getting taxed 20% on both jobs were wrong so would I be entitled to a tax rebate??
Thank you for your patience any advice will be gratefully received!

The 647L is your personal tax free allowance. This can only be set against one main job.
The BR is a tax code with no tax free allowance. This is set against all other jobs.
You have probably overpaid tax. You need to write your tax office (as you have done) or put the details on your self-assessment form (if you normally fill one in each year).0 -
It is possible to split your allowance between more than one job. With the allowance going up in April, I need to get in touch with the tax office again to reallocate my allowance (I do several part time jobs) so that I don't end up paying too much tax upfront and then having to claim it back again.0

I have not had any tax free allowance at all this year - this is my point.
I have been on BR (yes while working simultaneously in two jobs)
but I have earned below the £6470 threshold yet still been paying tax so how would I go about claiming a refund??0 -
What I normally do is write to my local office with a list of where i've worked, what i've earnt before tax and then what tax i've paid after April 6th and usually have my refund within 2 months (a long time, but its because they have a backlog all the time):T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

It is definitely worth a try! I only recently wrote to the tax office that dealt with my most recent employer as I thought I was due a rebate (I had used the HMRC Tax Checker to work this out). I understand that you have written to them, did you include P45s or P60s anything like that? When I wrote to them about 4 weeks ago I sent off my P60 and have just received a £650 rebate
Good Luck!!

Sorry for adding this in here but it seemed like a suitable place. I have just started working for 20 hours at one place and may have another job working 12 hrs somewhere else. Does this mean I will be taxed twice also? or on just one job? Im so confusedDooyoo fund: £14.26
Ciao fund: £2.020 -

You pay income tax on all your earnings, but the first £7,475 of your income (if you're under 65) is exempt from tax.
HMRC website : http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/personal-allow.htm#1If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
This happens to me every year because I'm a student and work a few jobs that are highly paid but temporary. At the end of the tax year I just write to my local tax office, detailing exactly how much I've earned, from which jobs, when, and how much tax I've paid. One year I waited six months for my refund, but usually it's just a couple of months.
On the plus side, it's like saving but without the willpower required! I get a nice little lump sum at a time of year when I don't have much work on. I love being overtaxed!0 -

Hi
I worked for the tax office until recently. If you earned less than £6475 between April 2010 and April 2011 and paid tax, then you will be due a repayment of that tax. What you need to do is write to the tax office with a list of all your jobs, giving the dates you worked there and send in your p60/p45s for the tax year 10/11. If you've already done this in your previous letter you'll just need to wait for a reply - it takes weeks unfortunately, but you will get a repayment once they have all the information.
Hope this helps0 -
Just do self assesment online and you can get your tax rebate within days of completng the form.0
