Has the internet had a detrimental effect on your OS ways?

Ok I would never say the internet is 100% bad - it's great for finding stuff quickly and ofc chatting to you wonderful OS people! But I suddenly realised that I refer to it for everything. I have loads of books downstairs but when I want a recipe 9/10 I Google it online. The nice thing with books is when you thumb through looking for a recipe, you end up reading loads of others and discovering gems. Also in the past if I couldn't find what I wanted I would have popped down to the library or bookshop which gets you out of the house and chatting to people. Before I had a computer I would have gone to the allotments up the road for a bit of veg growing advice, or stuck my head around the vets door to ask a quick question about "Can rabbits eat such and such?" etc. Now I never do those things because the answers are online. I can see the good side like if it's too far to travel, or pouring with rain or late at night then the internet is great - but we did survive before without it!! Do you think it is a bit of a mixed blessing or am I just crazily rambling on?! ;)

  • Hi,

I have to say no! The internet has only had a positive influence on my frugal ways. I find it a great way to get some basic information without parting with any cash or wasting shoe leather. I use it as a tool to go along with talking to folks, poking in books and all the other stuff available to me. Plus it's a good way of making me realise I'm just procrastinating and I should switch off and do something instead of just reading about it!

    Hi dandy-candy,

Yes, the internet has had a detrimental effect on my Old Style ways.

While I can find recipes and advice etc at my fingertips online, I find the internet to be the biggest waste of time in my life. I pop on to do something online which need only take a few minutes, and before I know it two hours have passed....two hours which would have been filled with Old Style activities in my pre-internet days. I really think I had a much more Old Style life before I had a pc. Doesn't stop me using it though! :o

    Timewise YES:embarasse:embarasse
    Inspiration wise NO:rotfl:

  • I agree with CH27. I spend hours looking at the OS board but do get a lot of inspiration from it...

On that topic, I must be off! x
  • i think the opposite to the way you do
i think it has streamlined my life enabling me to be more OS

for instance you say you would have gone the lotties for veg advice
in that time i google, find, do, done

you meanwhile are still walking to the lotties

i have lots of books, i LOVE books
i read recipe books in bed,
but if i want to know something specific, i google
saves me trawling through all my books
its done before i would have even found it in a book

i alos think its a huge resource here
sometimes we think we are as OS as we can be
yet a browse on here usually throws up a little nugget of wisdom
and you think "D'oh, why didnt i think of that!!"

the bigger question i think we ALL need to ask ourselves is........

has the internet killed our self discipline:rotfl:

yes it can be addictive and we are all guilty of spending maybe too much time here sometimes
but hey ho, we could be doing worse things, and its a rare day i dont learn something new here:D
