Fraud - How do I tell them they have the wrong person?

Options
Hi,

It seems that someone has opened at least 2 mobile phone accounts with 3 Mobile using my name; I have just received a letter from a debt collector asking me to pay up.

I have checked my status with CreditExpert and there is no mention of debt or credit check for these mobile phone accounts.

Can someone please advise me how to inform the debt collectors they have the wrong person. I ask as I don't want give them my real address, tel no, etc. They have the wrong address and I only got the letter because the postman knew my name!!

Should I write to them or call them and how much info about the real me should I give them? Should I report to the police also to get a crime number?

TIA

So does it have your address on too? You said they have the wrong address? The post is confusing.

Does it have your name AND address on? If no, ignore it. If yes just write them a letter including the letter you got saying you are not the person they are looking for and DONT sign it.

Have you checked all 3 credit reference agencies?

Sounds like your postman is presuming the post is for you, but if its not addressed to you at your address then you have nothing to worry about. Could be another person with the same name as you.

I would put back in the post box with 'mis-delivered' on the envelope.

  • Thanks for replying.

The address on the letter is nearly correct, I have a very unusual name so the postman knew where to put the letter.

The letter is for me, as suggested I will write them a letter telling them they have the wrong person.

    Thanks again,

    You have 2 options:

1-ignore as they dont have the exact name and address and your credit report shows nothing

2-contact the companies directly, tell them you have been the victim of fraud and you want to report it. You will be required to sign a sworn statement that it wasnt you and if you have moved recently; probably you will need to prove the date. This is a civil matter and the police wont be interested in my experience. (this happened to me after I moved house and it took months to sort out).
