Was I over-taxed?

During my gap year, I worked part-time at Tesco from May 2009 to May 2010. It was only 3 days a week, doing 5 -6 hour shifts on those 3 days. It was my first, and only job.
During that time my P60 says i earnt a total of £6339.25 and from that, I was taxed a total of £1267.80. This seems a bit steep?

Does anyone know if I'm entitled to get anything back?

All of it .......... if that's your only income for the year?

You've been taxed at 'BR' ....... which is 20% with no personal allowance. You send the P60 (copy it first) to the HMRC office mentioned on it - clarify this was your sole job - and request the refund. do it now - before it gets busy after 6th april.

Thanks! Nice to know I'll be getting it back.
Silly question - the HMRC office name just says LP LOTHIANS TSO (846). Is this just a generic address? Will the full address be on their website somewhere?
So a photocopy of my P60 and a letter briefly explaining, is all I need to send to them?

Send the original P60 - you keep the copy. But otherwise - yes - just a basic letter setting out the fact this was your sole job.

The address '846' translates to is :-

    Customer Operations
    Grayfield House
    5 Bankhead Avenue
    Sighthill
    Edinburgh
    EH11 4AE

........ if that sounds sensible? You can check it by inputting the '846' here :

what other work have you done since april 2010?

if none (and you won't work before 5th april 2011) then you can claim back the tax paid for this tax year too

Mike, I don't know if there is a tax office there but the address certainly exists and is in an area of Edinburgh where there are a lot of public sector offices so I would imagine it's correct.

OP - as Clapton says you'll be able to reclaim tax for 2010-11 if you haven't worked since you left Tesco in May, the tax that you paid from April - May 2010 will be on the P45 that Tesco gave you when you left. I'm not sure what the process for reclaiming that is, have you been on JSA since then? If you have then maybe it will be repaid automatically - I'm sure someone will know.

    .

Fine. But the 'is it sensible' really related to Tesco payroll being consolidated to that HMRC office. It's far away from where Tesco HO is - so I was unsure if their paying point / payroll is adjacent to Edinburgh?

Quite a lot of offices that are paying out from the London area are "farmed out" to Edinbugh area for tax.

LP = London Provincial, my OH 's Tax Office was there in Edinburgh at one point, his employer's head office was in London.
