He as always had his tax done through paye, However this year the tax office has sent him a tax return which he filled in and they are saying he has been on the wrong tax code and owes them £6000

how can this be when his tax gets stoped automaticly ? my father doesnt have much money always had min/low waged jobs and is tottaly sick about this. Now hes getting letters with £100 fines on for late installment payments.

We dont know where to turn what to do, my dad cant really afford an accountant

What was his tax code on the 2009-10 P60?

List all his income as shown on the Self Assessment calculation.

ok i will get some more info from him and post back in a min
  • We really need the information however the chances of someone on a low paid salary under paying 6k through PAYE is unlikely. Either the SA was done wrong; there are complicating factors such as benefits in kind or your father just didnt bother to do anything about vastly underpaying via PAYE.

6k tax underpayment is probably about 30k of salary not being PAYE/Taxed properly.
  • My guess is that the tax deducted under PAYE has not been entered on the return.

Does that mean that the new computer system which can find all the income you have received (sometimes twice over) cannot find the tax on the same income?
    OMG
The only thing that is constant is change.
  • Why was he filling-in a SA tax return? Renting out a property? Income from shares/investments? CGT?

Reasons for needing to filling a tax return are listed here - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/SelfAssessmentYourTaxReturn/DG_4017116

For the period which HMRC says tax is due of £6,000, dig out all payslips, salary statements etc and work out what tax should have been due over that period for yourself.

No, it means the person completing a self-assessment return (note the word 'self') has forgotten to include it.

Has he asked HMRC to state why they think £6,000 is owed....?

What conversations have taken place between him and HMRC?
