Tesco 'Don't substitute' option preselected

I've just finished my bill and looking through the basket I'm feeling a bit suspicious. Next to several of the items 'don't substitute' is selected for me by Tesco.

Some of the items I might have put don't substitute on previous orders like some pasta sauces where I ended up with 6 of the same instead of 2 of each of 3 flavours but the others are things I'd never argue about being replaced because replacing would mean a better deal.

Tesco have decided to select 'don't substitute' on value fish fingers, chicken, choc mouses and noodles (among a few others). I might be trying to start a conspiracy theory here but nearly all of the 'don't substitute stuff' is the cheapest of that kind of thing.

I changed it back to allowing substitutions. Check baskets before you check out incase it's not just mine!

That sounds like a reasonable policy... if you are buying 'value' items then you are obviously on a budget and wouldnt be happy if they changed your value fish fingers to premium brand fish fingers?

But they always give you a "price match" refund so wouldn't end up paying any extra.

  • The substitutions are provided at the same price as the item ordered though.

Mine were a bit mixed up too after they changed to their new web page. I just reset & they've stayed the same ever since.

What I have generally found since, is that if you're shopping from your favourites list, the option remains as you previously set it. If you've added a 'new' item to your list, maybe because it is on offer that week, the default setting is 'don't substitute'. You just need a quick scroll down to change these options to how you want them before you check out.:)

It's very reasonable that a Supermarket would rather not have to upgrade your Value items for a more expensive alternative just because they happen to be out of stock.
