lpg v diesel Van's

Hi Guys,
I'm after some advice here.

i'm looking into buying a Ford transit connect or vauxhall combo van. I have about £5000 to spend and not sure what would be better LPG or diesel?

I will be doing about 35000 miles a year and the vans I'm looking at are already converted.

Any of guys running a LPG van and are the saving that much?

Thanks all
Billy

My corsa LPG car gets 32mpg on LPG, same as the manufacturer rating in the book.
In the manfacturers book, the 2003 Combo 1.6 8V is listed as getting 31mpg

I don't know the LPG tank size in a combo but in the corsa it 37 litres

You can find your LPG prices here

I am running an LPG berlingo and yes there are savings to be made running LPG.

Just be careful buying one already converted. Most converted cars sold are sold for a reason and they often have problems. An LPG car running right is not one that tends to get moved on, as it takes several years to recover the conversion costs.

My wife has a 1.3 CDTI corsa which shares the Combo diesel engine. The engine is a Fiat and it's been problematic and based on what research I've done it's not a reliable beast at all. Lots of people with problems on 3 and 4 year old corsa's and Combo's. The wife's is not year 4 years old with 30k on the clock and there's a big problem with the EGR valve or the turbo is goosed. Seems loads have the same trouble with them according to the vx owners forums.

I quite often drive a transit combo (Petrol & LPG), it's a great drive and you hardly notice the difference between the two fuels
  • Just popped on here to check that my website had been given a plug and it was in the first reply! Thanks Wig :)

I've got a 2.2 Honda Prelude running on LPG that I converted myself (quite handy with the spanners) and from the day it was fitted the only difference I've noticed has been a hevier wallet.

It's exactly the same performance and never given me any troubles. I get 24.6 mpg out of my car on LPG

Which is about the normal 10% less than I got on petrol.

LPG costs 50% or less than the price of petrol for a 10% hit in fuel economy as a rule of thumb. Diesel costs around 3% more than petrol with a 25%-40% increase in MPG. LPG wins.

Maintenance: Slight win for the diesel.
Road Tax: Win for the LPG.
