Are Moorcroft lying to me?

Evening all. I have a default notice on my file from January 2009.
Alas, it is pretty much my fault how it got there as i was young, dumb, and full of...idiocy.
The unsettled balance on Equifax is £56 which i am quite happy to pay off.
I rung Orange to see if they would take the payment, who after ages going round the houses sent me on to Moorcroft.
I explained my situation to Moorcroft and said if i make the payment today, will the default come off my credit file?
The girl was (in my opinion deliberately) non committal
"It will improve your credit rating"
"It will come off eventually"
So i asked her to confirm, in writing, that making a payment to Moorcroft will lift the default notice that Orange gave me, to which she said she couldnt do.
Am i right in thinking she was just trying to pitch me to get the payment there and then?
Thanks guys

For the account record to be strictly accurate, the default should stay but simply marked as settled/satisfied.
Is the default record now in Orange's name or Moorcroft's?
If it still says Orange, then Moorcroft may not even have the authority to remove it even if they wanted to?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

its still in Oranges name! if i settle the debt will it impact my credit file positively regardless of whether its a default or not?
Thankyou! much appreciated.0 -
I would email the situation to the following address:
referrals.fax.inbox@everythingeverywhere.com
I emailed them recentely asking them to remove 7 late payment markers from my credit file as gesture of goodwill and they
did no questions asked.
Or could you not use this template letter:Letter to arrange payment for Default removal
Dear Sirs,
Account No:
I write with reference to previous communication regarding an outstanding balance on the account and wish to make an offer to resolve that will suitably please both parties.
I do have an outstanding balance on the account, as you are fully aware this is made up primarily of charges. However, a default to you and no payment will not achieve much and so I therefore write to try and resolve matters amicably, that will suit both of us long term.
I propose to offer a full and final payment to settle and close this account to the value of 50% of the original amount, which will take into account and absorb, a lot of the charges that have been added to the account throughout time.
The alternative is for me to place the account formally into dispute and demand s.10 CCA (1974) is brought into play (cease & desist) whilst I reclaim all unlawful charges combined with all costs. I shall then look at the legality of the assignment of debt; the issuance of a default notice and the agreement (prescribed terms) and between them, i'll probably be able to counter sue and litigate over unenforceability.
To confirm, I am more than happy to settle as much as 50% of the total amount owing so long as you can agree to, and ensure that, the following actions will be carried out;- The Default Notice will be removed
- The Status of the account will change from “Defaulted” to “Settled”
- The Current Balance will appear as £0.00
- The Default / Delinquent Balance will be set to £0.00
- There will be no date in the “Defaulted Date” field (as it will be removed)
- There will be no date in the “Date Last Delinquent” field on the report
- This will apply to all 3 Credit Reference Agencies, namely Experian, Equifax & Call Credit
Failure to agree will result in more formal papers being sent, by return.
I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully

If the default is accurate it won't be removed, it will simply be marked satisfied to show there's nothing owing now. Defaults stay on your credit report for six years from the default date, then they are automatically removed. In the meantime, if you think it might help, you can add a note to the entry to explain why you defaulted. Future lenders will see this and may take it into account. Once the default goes, the note will go too.
