How to stop constantly worrying

Options
I'm not sure where to ask this but thought I would try here.

I keep myself awake most nights worrying about the future and my financial situation. I was a home owner but am now living with family. I do have a job but it will be a very long time (if ever) before I am a home owner or even renting somewhere on my own (although I do only have a fairly small debt).

I worry about this and where I will end up. I also constantly worry about my family and what happens to me if something happens to them etc.

During the day I am relatively content and accepting of my situation. I know there is no point in worrying but I literally wakes me up at night.

Do you know of a way I can break this cycle.

(sorry if this isn't the place to ask something like this).

Thanks in advance.

  • I used to do exactly the same every day (or night), until I come to terms with the fact i was in debt I could no longer manage - accepted it and dealt with it in the best way I could. Since that point in January I have slept like a baby.

You sound like you are beating yourself up, you need to feel as though you have done everything within your power to be in the best possible situation - imagine how much worse things could be. Losing your house must have been a huge wrench but you need to put it into perspective. You are working towards become debt free and one day you will be there.

Take some time out for you, splash out on a new bubble bath, book and chill out ;)

    Hope that helps x

  • Take comfort in the fact that you ARE making a difference to your debt - I am impressed at how much you have already paid! I get anxious and weirdly am not sleeping well at the moment, despite the fact I am really happy! But just have a nice walk, have a bath, read for a bit and snuggle up xxx

  • Thank you both.

I know you're right and I also know worrying doesnt help!

I think we all worry about our finances and how easily everything can be tipped upside down through redundancy / illness etc.

I think for me peace of mind is about having some control no matter how small. In your situation you are paying off your debts which is far better than increasing them. You're living arrangements aren't ideal for you but they don't have to be for ever. Hold onto whats going well, what will be good in time and always remember there are those worse off.

Even if you put £2 per week in a ' home of my own pot' just seeing it there will be a start to your road of freedom.

Have you looked on the sticky at the top of the forum at the snowball calcultor. I found it was great, because it gave me a date when everything would be sorted out, even though it's a way off (feb 2013), but now I feel as if every day is one day closer.
