Violin Lesson

Options
I live in Derby and i'm thinking of having Violin Lessons i am 32 so i know i late starter and it will be harder to learn. Played keyboard and trumpet 20+ years ago.

I have looked around for private teachers just wondering if there any other options open to me besides this route, i.e. groups or bands that will train you etc... Anyone know where I should start?

I appreciate as much info as possible as i'm completely new to violin.

Thanks in advance.

  • I'd suggest a teacher attached to an independent music shop.

I do this, and benefit from tuition from someone who makes their living 50% from lessons and 50% from performing/composing/writing. There is no need to ever stop learning, as a tutor can always come up with ways to refine your technique and increase your enjoyment, as well as give you useful advice and support for when you do play with groups.

If anything, it's actually easier to learn as an adult, as you actually want to do it. You tend to get a better quality instrument, you practice regularly, do as you are instructed rather than decided you just want to do what is cool, don't miss lessons due to detentions and you have personally invested your time and your money in it. (and you can already read music, so that's saved the cost of about 8 lessons in itself :D)

I don't know Derby personally, so I would start with the music shops and ask at the desk who they knew of - they may offer discounts on instruments, and will often recommend the teachers they hear about most as being good, rather than the less than great ones.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • Plenty free lessons on youtube!
  • Great tuition video clips on internet at toddehle.com. Todd can also be accessed via youtube . . . I think it's ProfessorV?
Lots of music book/CD/DVD tuition on amazon.
Have a look at the elidatrading site for a Gliga violin.
    All the best.

I know a fantastic violin teacher in Ashbourne if you are interested. All 3 of my children have been taught by her. She is nearly an hours drive away for us but is very worth it.
My youngest is now 19 and still travels the 33 miles for his lesson.

As someone in their mid 30s who started fiddle lessons 6 weeks ago, and is really enjoying it, I would advise you to go for it. I thought about it for ages before taking the plunge and wish now I had done it earlier.

Like you I had played instruments as a kid. It's amazing how quickly reading music, listening to pitch etc will come back to you. Good luck!

Find a qualified teacher on the ISM register - http://www.ism.org/locator/ - this is a register which requires a teaching diploma - be careful of the ones anyone can join.
