Just to be absolutely clear.

Unless you have an NTSC TV and 110 volts power, it won't work (you will probably blow it up!). Also, I believe that Sony don't honour guarantees over here. My brother lives in the US and I looked into it, but its too difficult....

I purchased a Japanese PSP when they first came out and was told that if it breaks it has to be returned to the country of which it was designed to be sold in for it to be repaired and you had to pay all the costs getting it their and back

Not sure if it will be the same with the PS3 but I would not bother importing one as you are bound to need a step up/down convertor
