Water Flosser/Oral Irrigator any recommendations?

My 12 year old has had braces fitted. He has trouble cleaning his teeth properly. Has a bit of plague built up between his gum and brace. His dentist recommended waterpik which they sell. The water jet will help remove plague and bits from unaccessible places.
Can anyone recommend one? Is waterpik good?
Read reviews on waterpik and some people complained about the battery life.
