8 year old loan please help

please help
I sucsesfully applied for a 1000 pound loan with the Abbey National bank in 1999. and also had a bank account with them.
I recieved the money and began my repayments. approx 6 months later I fell into fianancial difficulty and my loan was reffered to a credit agency . my bank account also fell into ruins and due to charges and refused direct debits i owed approx 1000 on the bank account,
it was then agreed that the intrest would stop on both accounts and it was agreed that I paid back the loans in smaller payments over a longer period of time .
this worked fine and after a couple of years I contacted the company and arranged a sttlement price for the two loans and paid them both in full that was in 2004.
i have never heard another thing from the bank or credit company untill 4 months ago.
when i revcieved a letter from another credit agency stating that i owe the abbey national 1,600 for an unpaid loan,
i inturn contacted the abbey they said that they do not keep records for that long and have no records of me paying this loan off. i have no records at home to confirm these payments.
the credit agency refuse to assist and have statedthey are to send a man around to my house and are sending me to court . i do not know how to resolvethis matter .
as i have no original documentation and the abbey are reluctant to assist and the original company i made  the payments to do not hold the records any longer. can some one please advise me on this

  • appoligise the loan was taken out in 1998
  • how did you pay them, cash, cheque, through a bank account (bank transfer)? That would be a starting poiint, If it was in 2004, they should have a record. If through a bank account I would request a copy of your bank statements that far back, it can be done, I'm a bit puzzled, why did you not keep a record of this important event?

  • I agree with AMILLIONDOLLARS. Abbey WILL have records going back to 2004 (and way beyond), and if they say they don't they are lying. Be firm with them. This whole situation sounds preposterous.
  • You will also want a copy of your statements to claim back all the charges they took from you ;)
