Sewing Machine Basics in the West Midlands

I have recently acquired my late mother's sewing machine and would like to learn how to quilt.

However, I am a total novice and have no idea about how to set up and use the sewing machine.

Any experiments always result in large knots of thread.

Are there any tutors or courses that anyone can think of in the Wolverhampton area that would teach me the basics of sewing machine use and maintenance?

I've tried googling and there are some adult education type things which require day attendance (I work full time) or are some sort of in-the-sticks 'out reach' thing which I can't get to.

Any advice would be appreciated.

have you tried Brewers on the Dudley Road ? They sell sewing machines and are a font of knowledge, been there for generations. they might know of classes or someone who would help you.
