what to do with Deeds

Options
We are going to be mortgage free in April and was just wondering if any one knows what we should do about our deeds?
Will the lender (Northern Rock) keep them for us?

My parents have theirs under their bed.. Its all electronic now so the actual deeds are pretty worthless.

As a legal sec I have pop in any say whilst this is mostly true there are exceptions and losing Deeds can add expense and time when selling. Also there have been instances when the Land Registry have miss-copied Deeds i.e. missed a page. Also if you bought your house many years ago its likely the Land Registry won't have them in storage.

So just keep them safe in case!

If you have a family solicitor they will quite often store your Deeds for free.

Northern Rock may be quite happy to keep the Deeds for you - give them a call and ask. They may ask you to keep £50 on your mortgage so that they will store the Deeds, each lender is different.
Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck :)

  • Do keep your own Deeds. If there is a property dispute it can take weeks to get them from the Bank/Building Society/Solicitor; I know from personal experience.
